Objective:

Participants will use the given DNA sequence, beads, and sticks to construct a self-standing double helix model of DNA, demonstrating both creativity and scientific accuracy.

Instructions for Participants:

1.Sequence Allotment:

  • Each team/participant will be provided with a long DNA sequence.
  • The sequence must be strictly followed to ensure correct base pairing.

2.Materials Provided:

  • Beads (4 coloured to represent each nucleotide).
  • Sticks/rods (to represent sugar–phosphate backbone).

3.Construction Rules:

  • Each bead must be correctly paired (Complementation).
  • Sticks must be used to connect beads in the right sequence and orientation.
  • The model should show the double helix twist.
  • The structure must be self-standing and stable without external support.

3.Time Limit:

  • Each team will be given 60 minutes to complete the construction.

3.Team Size:

  • Teams of 3-5 members are allowed.

Outcome:

  • The DNA Model Construction Challenge enhanced students’ understanding of molecular biology through hands-on learning.
  • It developed their teamwork, problem-solving, and visualization skills while reinforcing concepts of DNA structure and base pairing.
  • Participants showcased creativity and precision by constructing stable, self-supporting double helix models.
  • The event successfully made learning genetics interactive, engaging, and fun.
