- It can be affordable by a common man due to its low cost price
4. WALK IN SAMPLE KIOSK (WISK)
Name of the Leader :Dr. L. Godson Asirvatham
(Professor and Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering)
Members :Mr. S. Mohanasundaram, Assistant Professor, Mr. R. Jayaseelan (Lab Asst),Mr. S. Manova, Research Scholar
Manufacturing Cost: The cost of manufacturing the kiosk is about twenty thousand rupees.
Objectives
- To design and develop a mobile sample collection kiosk, for use in hospitals by doctors and health workers, to collect the swab samples from the suspected COVID patient without having direct contact with them.
Societial Benefits
- The swab sample can be collected without direct contact with the patient. It ensures safety of the health workers.
- The swab samples are collected using fixed gloves hand extending out at the front side of the cabin. The gloves used for sample collection alone can be sanitized from outside.
- Hence, it reduces the time between sample collections and enables more tests in less amount of time.
- No need to sanitize the interior of the cabin after each and every sample collection.
- More than 40 samples can be collected using Walk-in sample Kiosk (WISK) in an hour.
- The health workers collecting the swab samples do not require Personal Protective Equipments (PPE). This reduces the need for more PPE Kits.
- It is a mobile cubicle cabin. Hence, it can be transported whenever and wherever required.
5. VISOR (FACE SHIELD)
Name of the Leader :Mrs. C. Prabha
(Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering)
Members :Dr. L. Godson Asirvatham,Professor and Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering
Manufacturing Cost: The cost of manufacturing the kiosk is about twenty thousand rupees.
Objectives
- To design and develop a low cost face shield to safeguard doctors and nurses working in hospitals from small-sized aerosol particles and thus reducing the risk of self contamination.
Societial Benefits
- Visors are endlessly reusable and easy to maintain. It can be cleaned with soap and water or common disinfectants.
- Shields form a barrier that keeps people from easily touching their own faces. Hence, it prevents the spread of virus.
- Face shields provide better coverage of the face, as compared to masks, thus reducing the risk of self-contamination.
- Cloth masks provide only partial filtration of small-sized aerosol particles which is totally stopped by using the visor
- When speaking, people sometimes pull down a mask to make things easier which is not necessary with a face shield.
- Even if the mask is pulled down, visor serves as a protective covering. It allows visibility of facial expressions and lip movements for speech perception.
- It can be affordable by common man because of its low cost.
