Dr. K. Sharmili is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Agronomy, School of Agricultural Sciences, Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences, Coimbatore. Her area of specialization is Agronomy, with a focus on cropping systems and intercropping. She has more than eight years of teaching experience and is currently guiding six full-time and one part-time Ph.D. research scholars. She has also guided 15 postgraduate students in their academic and research work.
Her academic and research contributions are focused on agronomy, particularly cropping systems and intercropping. She has participated in two symposiums, 10 workshops and training programmes, and 19 national conferences and seminars, and has presented 22 abstracts and delivered a guest lecture. Her research engagement also includes a Karunya Short-Term Research Grant for Students, obtained with V. Arun Kumar, funded by Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences.
Dr. K. Sharmili has contributed to scholarly publications through book chapters and authored a book titled Text Book on Agricultural Heritage, published by Sara Book Publications. Her book chapters address integrated farming systems for increasing farmers’ income, weedy rice as an emerging threat to rice cultivation, and recent advances in agricultural sciences and technology. Her academic contributions reflect her involvement in agricultural research, knowledge dissemination, and the advancement of agronomy.
She has received the Maulana Azad Fellowship for Minority Students for Doctoral Research from the UGC. Her recognitions include the Professor M. S. Swaminathan Best Young Scientist Award for Agronomy in 2019, the Dr. S. Subramanian Award for the Best Ph.D. Crop Research in Agronomy in 2020, the Young Agricultural Scientist Award in 2021, the Best Teacher Award in 2025, and the Best Oral Presentation Award in December 2025. She is a lifetime member of the Indian Society of Agronomy, Indian Academic Researchers Association, BOSE Science Society, and SADHNA – Society for Advancement of Human and Nature.
