Dr. P. Ramesh Kumar

Dr. P. Ramesh Kumar is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Agriculture at Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences, with over 18 years of combined teaching and research experience. He holds a Ph.D. in Biotechnology from Karunya University, Coimbatore (2017), an M.Phil. in Coastal Aquaculture from Manonmaniam Sundaranar University (2006), an M.Sc. in Plant Biology and Biotechnology from St. Xavier’s College, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University (2004), and a B.Sc. in Plant Biology and Biotechnology from the same institution (2002).

His areas of expertise include Plant Biotechnology, Plant Biochemistry, Crop Physiology, Molecular Biology, Agricultural Biotechnology, Food Science, and Sustainable Agriculture. His teaching expertise encompasses Plant Tissue Culture, Plant Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Introduction to Biotechnology, Crop Physiology, Principles of Food Science and Nutrition, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Bio-techniques and Instrumentation, and Bacteriology, Mycology and Parasitology. His research experience includes plant biotechnology, phytochemistry, bioactive compounds, agricultural biotechnology, and interdisciplinary applications of artificial intelligence and biotechnology.

His doctoral research focused on the effects of Sauropus androgynus leaf extract on obesity, diabetes, inflammation, and immunomodulation in mice. His current research includes the extraction and characterization of bioactive compounds from Sauropus androgynus for obesity and diabetes management, computational genetic engineering approaches to improve phytochemical concentrations, and biochemical and molecular mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance in environmental microbes. His publications cover areas including flood stress in fruit crops, genome editing of plant growth-promoting microbes, machine learning for soil analysis and micronutrient classification, and the antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties of Sauropus androgynus.

Dr. P. Ramesh Kumar served as a Research Associate in the Division of Biotechnology at Karunya University from 2007 to 2017 before joining Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences as an Assistant Professor in 2017. He has participated in professional development programmes, workshops, and training in HPLC, immunotechnology, research methodology, climate change, intellectual property rights, smart farming, robotics, and advanced analytical techniques. He has also completed NPTEL certifications in Cyber Security and Privacy, Machine Learning and Deep Learning – Fundamentals and Applications, Wheeled Mobile Robots, and Industrial Robotics: Theories for Implementation.
