K. Gerard Joe Nigel is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Robotics Engineering, School of Engineering and Technology, at Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences, where he has been serving since July 2006. He holds a B.E. in Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering and an M.E. in Electronics and Control and is pursuing a Ph.D. in the optimization of renewable energy. He has 15 years of teaching experience, 1.5 years of industry experience, and 9 years of research experience. His areas of specialization include Optimization Techniques and Smart & IoT Devices, while his research interests focus on Sensor Design, Industrial Automation, and Automotive Systems.
He has contributed extensively to teaching and research by handling undergraduate and postgraduate courses in instrumentation, industrial automation, embedded systems, robotics, intelligent controllers, and industrial communication networks. He has published 17 international journal papers and presented 24 international and 3 national conference papers. He has also participated in numerous conferences, workshops, and faculty development programmes and has guided 30 master's projects. He is a member of IEEE and Biomedical SI, a Certified Cyber Crime Intervention Officer, and actively contributes to professional and academic activities.
Mr. Gerard Joe Nigel has successfully secured research funding for several innovative projects from Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences, ICMR, and Harvard Medical School. His funded projects include the development of embedded systems, biomedical devices, hospital robotics, cryotherapy instruments for sports injuries, and automation technologies. He also serves as a member of professional bodies such as IEEE, ISAC, and BMESI and has actively contributed to innovation initiatives as an Innovation Ambassador under the Ministry of Education, Government of India.
His research focuses on optimization techniques, smart and IoT devices, renewable energy systems, embedded systems, biomedical instrumentation, industrial automation, automotive electronics, and sensor technologies. In addition to his journal and conference publications, he has published a patent for a low-cost portable cryotherapy instrument for treating sports injuries and authored a book chapter on intelligent facility management systems for smart cities. He is also a member of the Smart and Intelligent Building Mission research group, reflecting his continued contribution to research and innovation in Robotics Engineering.
