Dr. P. Sam Paul

Dr. P. Sam Paul is a Professor in the Division of Mechanical Engineering at Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Karunya Deemed University (2013), an M.E. in Computer Aided Design from Madras University (2000), and a B.E. in Mechanical Engineering from Manonmaniam Sundaranar University (1999). His research interests include Mechanical Vibration, Finite Element Analysis, Computer Aided Design, Minimal Fluid Application in Machining, Rotor Dynamics, and Smart Materials.

His research work focuses on mechanical vibrations, rotor dynamics, smart materials, magnetorheological systems, machining, and computer-aided engineering. He has published 51 international journal papers and 26 international/national conference papers, with 294 Scopus citations, 417 Google Scholar citations, and an h-index of 10. He has also contributed patents on viscosity measurement for magnetorheological fluid and self-tuning of magnetorheological dampers using a self-power mechanism.

Dr. P. Sam Paul has undertaken research projects funded by DST–TSDP and UGC, including a major project on a Smart Magnetorheological (MR) damper for enhancement of seismic resistance of structures with funding of Rs. 257.51 lakhs, and a project on suppressing tool vibration during hard turning with minimal fluid application funded at Rs. 7.31 lakhs. His research guidance includes 3 completed and 3 ongoing Ph.D. theses and 18 completed Master's theses.

He has extensive academic experience in Mechanical Engineering at KITS, serving as Professor from 2017 onwards, Associate Professor from 2014–2017, and Assistant Professor from 2009–2014. He previously served as Senior Lecturer from 2005–2008 and Lecturer from 2001–2005. His teaching interests include Strength of Materials, Design of Machine Elements, Design of Mechanical Transmission Systems, Theory of Machines, Computer Aided Design, Finite Element Analysis, and Mechanical Vibrations.
