Dr. R. Emilin Renitta is an Associate Professor in the Department of Food Processing Technology at Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences. She obtained her Ph.D. in Microbiology from Manonmaniam Sundaranar University in 2006, following her M.Sc. in Microbiology from the same university, where she was a Gold Medalist, and her B.Sc. in Microbiology from the University of Madras. She has also qualified the ARS-NET (Agricultural Microbiology) examination. Her academic and professional journey includes research positions before joining Karunya University in 2009, progressing from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor.
Her areas of specialization include Applied Microbiology, Food Processing, and Food Preservation. Her research focuses on the development of functional and value-added food products, mushroom-based foods, food preservation, bacteriophage applications, biosensors for food safety, biodegradable packaging, natural pigments, synbiotic foods, and food quality enhancement. She has also contributed to research on marine resources, antimicrobial agents, and food processing technologies, supporting innovations in food science and sustainable product development.
Dr. Emilin has extensive teaching experience at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, handling courses in Microbiology, Food Microbiology, Food Processing and Biotechnology, Food Analysis, Food Biochemistry, Meat, Dairy and Fish Processing, and related laboratory courses. She has also completed an international postgraduate course on Food Safety and Technology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, further strengthening her expertise in food processing and safety.
Her scholarly contributions include 40 research and review articles, book chapters, books, and patents, reflecting sustained research in food processing, microbiology, biotechnology, biomaterials, food packaging, biosensors, and functional foods. She has successfully guided two Ph.D. scholars and is currently supervising six doctoral candidates, in addition to guiding M.Phil. research, demonstrating her active involvement in research mentorship and academic development.
