Dr. K. Thangavel

Dr. K. Thangavel is the Director of the Centre for Food Science and Technology and Head of the Department of Food Processing Technology at Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, an M.Tech. from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, and a B.Tech. from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. With extensive academic and research experience, he has made significant contributions to the field of Food Process Engineering through teaching, research, and academic leadership.

His teaching expertise includes Dairy and Food Engineering and Emerging Trends in Food Process Engineering. As an academic leader, he has played an important role in advancing education and research in food processing technology while contributing to curriculum development and the growth of the department.

Dr. Thangavel’s research interests include micro and nano-encapsulation of functional food ingredients, ohmic heating of liquid egg white, milk and milk products processing, and post-harvest engineering and technology. He is an active member of several professional organizations, including the Indian Society of Agricultural Engineers (ISAE), International Society of Food Engineers (ISFE), the Association of Food Scientists and Technologists of India (AFST(I)), and the Indian Dairy Association (IDA).

His research contributions include publications in reputed national and international journals covering functional food ingredient encapsulation, ohmic heating, food process engineering, post-harvest technology, drying technology, fruit ripening assessment, food quality evaluation, and spectroscopic analysis of agricultural products, reflecting his sustained contributions to food processing and post-harvest engineering research.
