Dr. Xavier N. Fernando

Dr. Xavier N. Fernando is a Professor and Dean of the School of Engineering and Technology with around 30 years of international academic experience. He has been associated with Toronto Metropolitan University, where he has served as Director of the Intelligent Communication and Computing Laboratory since 2010 and as Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering since 2012. He was also appointed Fulbright Canada Research Chair in 2025.

He holds a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Calgary, a Master’s degree in Telecommunications from the Asian Institute of Technology, and a B.Sc. First Class Honours degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Peradeniya. His research interests include wireless and optical communications, Radio-over-Fiber, infrared and visible light communication, smart grids and smart buildings, connected electric and autonomous vehicles, tracking and localization, IoT, aerial-terrestrial networks, and machine learning and artificial intelligence.

His research contributions include nearly 300 publications, three books, and three patents. He has received research funding exceeding $3.3 million and has supervised postdoctoral fellows, research associates, doctoral scholars, and master’s students. His academic work covers communication technologies and intelligent connected systems, with research extending across wireless, optical, vehicular, aerial, and IoT-based communication environments.

Dr. Fernando has also contributed extensively to doctoral research and academic examination, including external Ph.D. examinations in areas such as MEMS pressure sensors, implantable antennas, molecular communication, adaptive routing, optical fibre sensing, semiconductor probes, and wireless networks. His academic profile reflects substantial international research, supervision, publication, and professional engagement.
