The Department of Food Processing and Engineering, under the School of Biotechnology was started in September 2005 to tap the unexplored potential of this sunrise industry in India. The department aims to provide value based education with core competence to the students. Graduates of the undergraduate program are expected to possess knowledge of the fundamentals of Food process engineering. This is the first University in India to give such an importance to Food Processing area on all its aspects namely, Food Safety Assurance Testing Laboratory with sophisticated analytical facilities, R&D Laboratory, Food Processing Training Centre and Food Processing Engineering academic courses with the generous support from the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Government of India.

Due to the interdisciplinary nature of this field, the course is so outlined that it covers areas in the Basic sciences, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Instrumentation and Technologies related to Food Processing and Preservation. The R&D Centre and Food Quality Testing Laboratory is a part of Food Processing and Engineering department and has been funded by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Government of India.
